Shocked supermarket shoppers had to leave without their groceries when the front facade of the Countdown in Sunnynook collapsed this evening.

Tania Corrigan was in the queue for the check-out when the collapse happened about 6pm.

“Finally get to the queue and there was this almighty crash and the side of the building falls down,” she told the Herald.

“It was a bit surreal really – a bit worrying that someone outside might have got hit by the debris, but it was all okay.”

Nobody was injured, but the supermarket was evacuated due to fears over live wiring.

“Unfortunately I had to leave without the groceries.”

There were “quite a few” other shoppers in the same boat.

Ms Corrigan was now heading to another supermarket to get her Friday night essentials.
